Calby’s ‘Hidden Beauty’ River: An Off The Beaten Path Oasis
Calby’s ‘Hidden Beauty’ River: An Off The Beaten Path Oasis
In desperate need of an escape from the unrelenting scorching hot summer heat; I decided to make the almost two hours long journey to the tranquil escape in the cool hills of Ocho Rios that is Calby’s Hidden Beauty River. Nestled comfortably along the borders of the parishes of St. Ann and St. Mary, just further up from it’s neighbours, the Blue Hole and Island Gully Falls and adjacent to the popular local hotspot, the Spanish Bridge is a hidden piece of paradise perfect for a relaxing day out.
I have heard about this place for a few years now and was entranced by postcard-worthy snapshots of blue turquoise pools flowing down stream. It was even a suggestion by Sarah from Miles Guide in my Jamaica’s Top Travel Bloggers Reveal Their Favourite Local Travel Destinations And Covid Travel Tips post. And with this heat attacking me like I owe it money, I knew it was the perfect time to make the trip.
How To Get There
The road to Calby’s Hidden Beauty River is marred by numerous potholes and craters truly testing your resolve and determination to get to your destination.
As mentioned before, the trip is approximately 2 and a half hours from Kingston via the North to South Highway. Once at the end of the highway, you take the 2nd exit off the round-a-bout and continue the drive towards Ocho Rios. From here, Google be your guide because the journey has you taking a few turns that admittedly I wasn’t paying as keen attention to because I was focusing on the road, especially the points where the road is winding or may get narrow. But for the most part Google gets you there and if you’re unsure, you can ask someone for help.
The entrance is marked by a sign inscribed with the words Calby’s Hidden Beauty River and painted in the colours red, green and yellow. You can’t miss it!!!
Calby’s Hidden Beauty Property
After paying the entrance fee of $1000 JMD per person, you are given access to the expanse of the property. The tranquil vibe immediately covers you as you take the scenes of pure majestic beauty in front of you. The gentle sound of the river rushing over rocks and down stream. The cool touch of the breeze gently caressing your skin. All invoking a soothing feeling that makes you happy you choose to make the trip.
Scattered across the property are benches and picnic tables perfect for sitting, eating and enjoying the days fill of family, fun or festivities as you see fit. There is also a bathroom on property, affectionately labelled ‘Bwoy’ (male) and ‘Gyal’ (female), that adds to the authentic chill vibes that Jamaica is so well known for. I’ve heard that sometimes there are hammocks hung out from the trees near the flowing river for you to lyme and laze but unfortunately when I went there, that wasn’t the case.
Take A Dip
Once you’re all settled it, then it’s time to take a dip and wash off in the river. You can choose to just relax and be soothed by the water in the shallower parts of the river or if you’re a more experienced swimmer, you can take your chance in the dipper ends. If you want to add a little more adventure to your trip, then you can use the on property rope swing that is hung down from a tree. Or, you can opt to try the river tubing activity that is offered. (NB Chukka White River Valley tubing activity passes through this river).
*Life jackets are also available for the less confident swimmers.
