7 Must Watch Halloween Movies for the spooky season

7 Must watch Halloween movies

Halloween comes but once a year and with it comes some of the best movies of all time. From the spooky and scary to the comedic and family-oriented to some absolute horror classics. There are so many must watch Halloween movies that should be on everyone’s movie marathon list. Today I am happy to share a few of my personal favourites with you all.

Before we begin I have to make a bit of a confession. I'm not a horror movie fan. The gore and guts, being scared shitless and creepy thrillers are just not my thing. So if you came here looking for those kind of movie recommendations then I'm sorry to disappoint but you won't find it here. There I got it off my chest. Whew! That felt great.

Instead, I'm sharing with you some of my must see movies. Most of these are light-hearted, fun, cookie cutter, Disney type movies that gives you just a little horror to get you into the Halloween mood. Nothing too gory but a good amount of spook and creepers to satisfy your Halloween appetite. So without further ado, let's begin shall we.

1. Hocus pocus

This is a straight classic people. I don’t know any Halloween movie list that can be complete without this movie!!! This over 20 year movie is an icon in its own right. After being resurrected by 3 unsuspecting teens; Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy steal the show as 300 year old witches with a bone to pick and terror to reign over Salem. With one liners like “I'll put a spell on you” and a trio of hilarious yet somehow endearing witches; there's nothing I love more than watching this movie every Halloween. This cult favourite is a nostalgic way to connect with the Halloween season.

2. Halloweentown

Speaking about Disney classics; would this list even be complete without adding Halloweentown to the list?! I think not. Another top notch Halloween movie that I have to watch each year.

Every year on Halloween, Grandma Aggie comes to visit Marnie and her siblings, Sophie and Dylan. Whenever she comes, she always brings amazing treats and reads the children a bedtime story called "Halloweentown", a mystical place where witches, vampires and monsters of all sorts live in peace.

After Marnie has a fight with her mother who doesn’t allow the children to celebrate Halloween, she runs away with their Halloween-loving grandmother and discover that she's a witch from a town called Halloweentown. Unbeknownst to her, her siblings follow along and the journey that ensues during their stay in Halloween town is one for the ages. A truly fabulous movie.

3. Hotel Transylvania

And I’m not only talking about the first one either. This entire trilogy is a hit. Giving us a peek into the world of our favourite and not-so favourite monsters.

When Count Dracula’s daughter, Mavis ventures out into the human world, she inadvertently leads a 21-year-old human Jonathan back to the hotel. An adventure ensues are Dracula tries to keep the other monsters from finding out that they have a human in their previously human-free sanctuary. Things become even more complicated when Mavis and Johnny ‘zing’ and develop a love connection. Realizing the human and his daughter have fallen in love, Dracula tries to stop the two from getting together in fear that human can never love his vampire daughter.

This laugh out loud, leave you in pure bliss is the perfect halloween movie for the whole family. And once you are finished with the first movie, keep up with the story by watching the 2nd and 3rd installments of the movie.

4. The Little Vampire

Talk about NOS-TAL-GIA. This movie literally gives me the feels everytime I watch. Imagine young pre-teen/teen Nella falling in absolute love with a movie. It was sweet and a great shouw about camaderie and not judging a book by its cover.

When 9-year-old Tony moves to Scotland, he is movie to not only a new town but a whole new country. Imaging being the new kid in school in a whole new place and not having any friends. Added to that since arriving at his new home, Tony has experienced recurring nightmares about vampires and a mysterious comet. Talk about a scary move.

But a chance encounter with Rudolph, a real life present-day vampire around his age, sees Tony going on a quest to help his new friend and Rudolph’s family from being captured and destroyed by the evil vampire hunter Rookery. Can Tony help his new friends in time?

5. Scary Movie

Now this is definitely not your average horror movie. This parody classic from the geniuses that are the Wayans Brothers is beyond a cult classic.

The movie is a spoof of some of our favourite horror/ slasher films, mainly Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer. There is no rhyme or reason with this movie. It is just pure unadulterated fun and belly in stitches comedy.

6. Twitches

Growing up the television series Sister Sister was one of my favourite shows to watch. So when the sisters, Tia and Tamera Mowry reunited to create a Halloween version of my beloved TV show, can I just say I was way excited. My glad bag did buss.

Similar to the intro plot on Sister Sister, Tia and Tamera play sisters Apolla and Artemis who were separated at birth after a evil magical entity known as the Darkness comes and tries to destroy them and their home world. Coventry.

After their father dies protecting them, their mother Queen Miranda sends them away to Earth in order to keep them safe. On their 21st birthday however, a somewhat arranged meeting occurs and the 2 are reunited. And as the saying goes, the rest is history.

7. Casper

I feel like this is my entire childhood right here. Growing up I watched Casper all the time. I watched it in the summer. I watched it in the winter. I literally watched it every single time I saw it on my TV. So is it a wonder that it is on my list? I think NOT! Casper the friendly ghost is literally one of my favourite movies of all times to this day. I kid you not. In fact, I may just go stream it right now.

Following the death of her father, heiress Carrigan Crittenden discovers she has only been left Whipstaff Manor in his will. Carrigan and her assistant, Dibs, find a map within the will's papers that tell of an alleged treasure hidden inside the manor, but find the property haunted by Casper and his poltergeist uncles, the Ghostly Trio, and unsuccessfully attempt to force the ghosts out by way of paranormal experts and a demolitions team. A lonely Casper watches a news report about paranormal therapist James Harvey and is instantly smitten with his teenage daughter, Kat, prompting Casper to inspire Carrigan in summoning Dr. Harvey to Whipstaff. Harvey and Kat are estranged due to his reputation and obsession with contacting the ghost of his late wife, Amelia. The Harveys move into Whipstaff, but Casper's attempt to befriend them fails when his uncles try to torment, and scare them away.
